Gavin Newsom Goes Fishing For 2028 Buzz And Gets Roasted Instead

Gavin Newsom took his 2028 non-answer into a Montana trout stream, and the carefully outdoorsy CNN moment left critics laughing at the bait.

The CNN interview placed California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) in waders beside Jake Tapper, where the two cast their lines while Newsom addressed whether he would compete against Kamala Harris in a future Democratic presidential primary.

Newsom said he would not enter that fight if Harris, the former vice president and former U.S. senator from California, also ran.

“Of course not. Why would I?” Newsom said when Tapper asked if he would run against her. “I wouldn’t do that to her. I wouldn’t do it to me. Why would I? I wouldn’t do that to you.”

“I wouldn’t waste everyone’s time. Who needs that?”

Tapper did not let the answer sit there, pressing Newsom on the fact that he could still decide to run. Newsom said that kind of matchup would hand “a gift from God” to everyone else and turn into “mutually assured destruction,” because he saw too much overlap between his world and Harris’ supporters.

“I know her base of supporters. I know her friends,” Newsom said.

The awkwardness only grew when Newsom reached for geometry and came up with something closer to meditation.

“The zen diagram on that is just pure crossover,” Newsom said.

Free Beacon reporter Chuck Ross turned the flub into the main event, writing, “The best part of this is when Newsom says ‘Zen diagram’ when he was talking about a Venn diagram.”

Much of the online ridicule zeroed in on the image itself, with Newsom and Tapper framed as two political-media figures trying to pass as ordinary fishing buddies.

“Jake Tapper and Gavin Newsom pretending to be regular guys fishing is absolutely hilarious,” one commenter wrote.

Politico Kenneth Baer connected the Montana scene to the California restaurant episode that shadowed Newsom during the pandemic.

“This is the most Gavin Newsom-ish fishing video ever — the French Laundry of fishing!” Baer wrote, referring to the upscale California restaurant where Newsom dined with friends during the pandemic despite statewide restrictions on social gatherings.

The waterlogged interview also reached “The View,” where the setting drew as much attention as anything Newsom said.

“It just seems such an odd place to have an interview,” moderator Whoopi Goldberg stated.

Joy Behar turned the riverbank setup into a CNN joke.

“Well, CNN keeps moving, so maybe they’re gonna do it in the water from now on,” Behar cracked.

Alyssa Farah Griffin said the fly-fishing look felt wrong for the governor’s public image.

“I just picture Gavin Newsom like, I don’t know, either dressed as Batman or in a fancy restaurant, not out fly fishing,” Griffin said. “He just feels awkward.”

The Newsom pile-on arrived alongside another round of Democratic image trouble online, after Harris posted Monday about artificial intelligence and critics resurfaced her own past explanation of the technology.

Harris urged President Donald Trump to “do his job to protect America’s interests” by seeking an agreement with countries such as China to restrict dangerous AI uses, limit development speed and set global testing standards.

Rather than staying on the policy demand, critics circulated a 2023 video of Harris discussing AI while she was vice president.

“I think the first part of this issue that should be articulated is AI is kind of a fancy thing,” Harris said in the older clip. “First of all, it’s two letters. It means artificial intelligence, but ultimately what it is is it’s about machine learning.”

Harris continued by discussing how the information put into a machine shapes what the system later produces in decisions or opinions.

Western Lensman used the older video to contrast Harris speaking off the cuff with her Monday statement, writing, “Kamala Harris on AI when it’s not a written statement crafted by a team of consultants.”

Another commenter posted a separate Harris video in which she described cloud storage by comparing digital files with private papers kept in a locked basement cabinet.

“It’s on your laptop, and it’s then, therefore, up here in this cloud, that exists above us, right?” Harris said in the clip.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D-IL) faced a different kind of image problem when video of him dancing on a rooftop to Kiesza’s “Hideaway” spread across X during the same weekend he announced Sunday that he would seek a second term.

Conservative accounts paired the dance video with attacks on Johnson’s handling of violence, crime and street takeovers in Chicago.

“1,320 people shot in Chicago in 2026 so far,” End Wokeness wrote while sharing the video.

Benny Johnson used the clip to point to the mayor’s approval rating and other city problems.

“23% approval rating. 40 people shot per week. Thugs doing ‘street takeovers’ every week. Businesses fleeing,” he wrote.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), now running for governor of Minnesota, was dragged into the same authenticity argument after conservatives accused her of using the same Vikings fan photo in posts across different seasons.

“Game Day against the Packers,” Klobuchar wrote Sunday on X before the team’s first game of the season. “Time to get out the shirt.”

Users compared the post with earlier Vikings messages and said the same shirt picture had been posted before with different framing.

“Dems trying to appeal to normal people in a nutshell lol,” Riley Gaines wrote on X.

Minnesota Staff Fraud Reporting Commentary went further, calling Klobuchar “the most inauthentic, plastic politician you will ever have the misfortune of encountering.”

Klobuchar is running against Minnesota Republican Speaker of the House Lisa Demuth (R-MN) in November to replace outgoing Democratic Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), and conservatives have also attacked her over a massive fraud scandal that unfolded in the state over the last decade while she represented Minnesota in the Senate.
