The legendary rocker praised Charles over the royal’s recent U.S. trip while greeting him at The King’s Trust’s 50th Anniversary Celebration at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
But the conversation quickly turned political. “May I say, well done in the Americas,” Stewart told the king in video footage posted online by a Daily Mail reporter.
“You were superb. Absolutely superb. You put that little rat bag in his place,” he added.
Charles did not visibly react to the comment, though laughter could be heard nearby as the pair continued down the carpet.

The remark immediately sparked speculation online that Stewart was referring to Trump, with whom the singer has had a long and increasingly public falling out.
The two men were once close enough to attend each other’s parties while living near one another in Florida.
Stewart previously told Radio Times that he used to spend time with Trump socially before their relationship deteriorated after Trump entered politics.

“We’re both on the beach. I used to go to his Christmas parties,” Stewart said. “He’s always been a bit of a man’s man. I liked him for that.”
But Stewart said Trump changed after becoming president.
Lady Elaine Fairchild, also known as Rod Stewart, complimented King Charles on his trip to America, noting he put that “rat bag in his place.”

“Since he became president, he became another guy,” Stewart complained. “Somebody I didn’t know.”
The singer later said he no longer considers Trump a friend, specifically pointing to the administration’s continued arms support for Israel.
“I can’t any more,” Stewart noted. “As long as he’s selling arms to the Israelis, and he still is. How’s that war ever gonna stop?”

Stewart also blasted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the war in Gaza.
“Someone’s gotta do something,” he remarked. “What Netanyahu is doing to the Palestinians is exactly what happened to the Jews. It’s annihilation, and that’s all he wants to do — get rid of them all. I don’t know how they sleep at night.”
The rocker has repeatedly gone after Trump publicly over the last several years.
In January, Stewart posted an Instagram video demanding British leaders pressure Trump into apologizing after the president reportedly criticized NATO allies over Afghanistan.
“I was born just after the war, and have great respect for our armed forces that fought and gave us our freedom,” Stewart commented.
“So it hurts me badly, deeply, when I read that the draft dodger Trump has criticized our troops in Afghanistan for not being on the front line.”

Stewart continued by invoking British troops killed during the war.
“We lost over 400 of our guys — think of their parents. Think about it!” he added. “And Trump calls them almost like cowards. It’s unbearable.”
The singer then directly appealed to British political figures. “So I’m calling on you, Prime Minister [Keir] Starmer, and [Nigel] Farage, please make the draft dodger Trump apologize. Please.”
Stewart’s latest comments arrived just days after Charles wrapped up a major visit to the United States during a tense geopolitical moment.
The king addressed Congress on April 28, warning lawmakers that the world had become “more volatile and more dangerous” than when Queen Elizabeth visited Washington in 1991.
Charles’ visit coincided with the ongoing Iran conflict and came shortly after the shooting near the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
“The challenges we face are too great for any one nation to bear alone,” Charles said during the address.
“But in this unpredictable environment, our alliance cannot rest on past achievements, or assume that foundational principles simply endure.”
He later condemned political violence while addressing the attack near the correspondents’ dinner.

“We meet, too, in the aftermath of the incident not far from this great building, that sought to harm the leadership of your nation, and to ferment wider fear and discord,” Charles said.
“Let me say with unshakable resolve, such acts of violence will never succeed.”
Despite Stewart’s latest jab, Trump and Charles appeared publicly cordial during the state visit.
The king traded jokes with Trump during a formal dinner that the president hosted with First Lady Melania Trump.
Charles joked that the evening represented “a very considerable improvement on the Boston Tea Party.”
He also referenced Britain’s burning of the White House during the War of 1812 while commenting on Trump’s renovation work.
“I’m sorry to say that we British, of course, made our own small attempt at real estate redevelopment of the White House in 1814,” Charles joked.
The monarch later drew laughs after responding to Trump’s previous comments suggesting Europeans would be speaking German without American intervention.
“Dare I say it, if it wasn’t for us, you’d be speaking French,” Charles quipped.
Stewart has also mocked Trump repeatedly during concerts and interviews.
During a 2024 performance in Las Vegas, the singer displayed photos of Trump with progressively orange skin tones while parodying remarks Trump previously made about Kamala Harris.

“I didn’t know he was Orange until a number of years ago, when he happened to turn Orange,” Stewart joked onstage.
“I respect either one but he obviously doesn’t because all of a sudden he made a turn and he went – he became an Orange person. I think somebody should look into that.”
The jab referenced Trump claiming Harris had “become Black” using similar wording.
Stewart later admitted the joke did not land well with portions of the audience.
“I had a little joke about him when he had all the tan, you know, the Orange Man,” Stewart recalled in the Radio Times interview. “And: ‘Boooo!’”
The singer had also expressed doubts years earlier about Trump’s ability to lead the country.
After being knighted by Prince William in 2016, Stewart said he did not believe Trump was suited for the presidency.
“Although he’s sort of a friend of mine, I don’t think he’s presidential,” Stewart said at the time. “I don’t think he’s made to be a president.”
Stewart’s criticism escalated again after the United States withdrew from the Paris climate agreement.
“That prick in the White House, pulling out of the Paris Accord is terrible,” Stewart said during a 2020 appearance on the “How to Wow” podcast.
“I think the good Lord’s intent on wiping us all out because we’ve spoiled the Earth,” he insisted. “We’ve spoiled it. I think it’s too late to turn back now.”
