California Gov. Gavin Newsom ignited backlash Sunday after telling a largely Black audience he is a “960 SAT guy” who “cannot read a speech.”
Newsom made the comments at an event in Atlanta, Georgia, while promoting his memoir, “Young Man in a Hurry,” as speculation builds about a possible 2028 presidential run.
Asked about his lifelong struggle with dyslexia, the governor attempted to draw a personal connection.
“I’m not trying to impress you. I’m just trying to impress upon you. I’m like you. I’m no better than you,” Newsom said.
His way of bonding with black ppl is to tell them how stupid he is & that he can’t read.
This means my first read on him was correct. He’s been handed so many things & put in high positions he never earned or deserved.

“You know, I’m a 960 SAT guy. And, you know, and I’m not trying to offend anyone, you know, ‘trying to act all there if you got 940,’” he continued.
“Literally a 960 SAT guy, you’ve never seen me read a speech. Because I cannot read a speech. Maybe the wrong business to be in.”
The clip spread across social media after conservative influencer account End Wokeness posted it, racking up more than 20 million views in a matter of hours.

Rapper Nicki Minaj accused Newsom of insulting Black voters while trying to relate to them.
“This means my first read on him was correct. He’s been handed so many things & put in high positions he never earned or deserved,” Minaj wrote on X.

She argued that Newsom was “trying to appeal to black voters by telling ‘them how stupid he is & that he can’t read.’”
“He’s not just TELLING them that they’re all probably stupid & probably can’t read, he’s LITERALLY SLOW-ING-DOWN-HIS-SPEECH to make them understand the words that are coming out of his mouth!!!! As if they’re children!!!!” Minaj added.
Actor James Woods added that “Newsom just stabbed himself in the nuts with an ice pick with this one…”
Republican lawmakers piled on the criticism, with notable remarks coming from both Sens. Tim Scott and Ted Cruz.
“Black Americans aren’t your low bar. We’ve built empires, created movements, outworked, outhustled and outsmarted people like you,” the South Carolina Republican posted.
“Stop using your mediocre academics as a way to patronize communities. Its ridiculous!”
Cruz blasted Newsom for setting “The soft bigotry of low expectations.”
Conservative commentators amplified the outrage. “This clip will haunt him forever,” Megyn Kelly wrote.
“California governor Gavin Newsom tells a black audience he’s just like them, got a 960 SAT and he can’t read,” Clay Travis posted.
🚨 VENEZUELAN DICTATOR NICOLAS MADURO IN U.S. CUSTODY 🚨 Do you AGREE Trump made America STRONG again??? ➡️➡️➡️ TAKE THE FREEDOM POLL NOW and stand with President Trump!!!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
“Will any Democrats planning to run in 2028 hit on him on this? They should, moronic statement.”
Mark Levin warned, “If any Republican said what this moron Newscum said their political careers would be over. Let’s see how the Democrats and their media react.”
Sean Hannity added, “@GavinNewsom Thinks a 960 SAT Makes Him ‘Like’ Black Americans. Let That Sink In.”
Newsom fired back at Hannity. “You didn’t give a s**t about the President of the United States of America posting an ape video of President Obama or calling African nations s**tholes,” he hissed.
“But you’re going to call me racist for talking about my lifelong struggle with dyslexia? Spare me your fake f**king outrage, Sean.”
.@GavinNewsom you didn’t give a shit being Joe Biden’s public spokesperson knowing Joe Biden partnered with the former Klansman Robert Byrd as they tried to prevent the integration of public schools. So spare me your F’ing fake phony feigned outrage.

Hannity responded in kind. “Gavin Newsom you didn’t give a s**t being Joe Biden’s public spokesperson knowing Joe Biden partnered with the former Klansman Robert Byrd as they tried to prevent the integration of public schools.”
“So spare me your F’ing fake phony feigned outrage,” the Fox News host spat back.
“And How about you get homeowners building permits in the Pacific Palisades instead of making an ass out of yourself daily? Just a thought…..”
Newsom’s communications director, Izzy Gardon, defended the governor.
“First MAGA mocked his dyslexia and now they’re calling Gavin Newsom a racist for talking about his low SAT scores,” she commented.
“This is fake MAGA-manufactured outrage. The Governor has said this publicly for years — including with Charlie Kirk and dozens of other audiences.”
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, who interviewed Newsom at the event, also pushed back.
“Take it from someone who was actually in the chair asking the questions: context matters more than a headline,” Dickens wrote on Instagram.
“The conversation around his new book included him speaking about his own academic struggles, including not doing well on the SAT.”
“That wasn’t an attack on anyone. It was a moment of vulnerability about his own journey. We’ve gotten so used to loud, chest-pounding politics that when someone speaks about shortcomings, people try to twist it into something else,” he continued.
“Let me be clear though. This is Atlanta. We don’t need anyone to tell us when to be offended. And history has shown… when we are, you’ll know. If you want the full context, watch the full clip, read the book, and engage the complete conversation.”
The controversy unfolded as Newsom acknowledged in a CNN interview that Democrats need to recalibrate their message.
“From the prism of purely politics, there’s no doubt that the Democratic party needs to be, dare I say, more culturally normal,” Newsom told Dana Bash.
“I believe that – less prone to spending a disproportionate amount of time on pronouns, identity, politics, more focused on tabletop issues, things that really matter,” he remarked.
“The stacking of stress in terms of electricity bills and childcare costs and healthcare and obviously housing costs and how easily we get trapped in that, how I’ve fallen prey to that,” Newsom listed.
He warned that Democrats will “lose a lot of people” if they cling to “identity politics.”
“But I think if you can’t hold the line on competitive sports — again, sports, there’s some nuance in this larger conversation,” Newsom claimed.
“But competitive medal sports, if we can’t find that nuance, I think we’re going to lose a lot of people that aren’t — we’re not going to get invited to a larger conversation. So I do think we have to be more sensitive in that respect.”
