Vice President J.D. Vance found himself at the center of a political firestorm over the weekend after a family trip to Disneyland turned into an opportunity for California Gov. Gavin Newsom and hundreds of protesters to criticize the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.
Newsom, who is widely seen as a potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, launched multiple attacks on the vice president through his social media accounts.
His criticisms focused not only on the optics of Vance enjoying a family vacation during a turbulent political moment but also on the underlying policy decisions being implemented by the Trump administration in California.
“JD is back in California. He won’t take the time to debate and defend gutting our Medicaid system, taking away kids school meals, militarizing America’s streets, or adding trillions to the debt,” Newsom wrote on X, referencing a challenge he had previously issued for a public debate.

Instead, he’s off to Disneyland. Probably to detain Mickey Mouse at this rate. https://t.co/ppzwnVSqA1

“Instead, he’s off to Disneyland. Probably to detain Mickey Mouse at this rate,” he added in a sarcastic swipe.
In another post, Newsom directly responded to footage of Vance walking through Disneyland alongside his wife, Usha Vance, and their two children.
“Hope you enjoy your family time, @JDVance. The families you’re tearing apart certainly won’t,” the governor posted, taking aim at the administration’s nationwide immigration raids.

Newsom’s official press office joined in the attacks, tweeting, “35% of Anaheim’s residents are immigrants. Disneyland doesn’t run without them. Enjoy their labor, @JDVance.”
Another message read, “JD Vance on Tom Sawyer Island looking for the next Alligator Alcatraz. Too many happy families for him in one place.”

Vance, for his part, was dismissive of Newsom’s goading. “Had a great time, thanks,” he replied on X Sunday evening.
Despite the attempt to downplay the incident, Vance’s visit to the amusement park triggered widespread frustration among park-goers and sparked protests outside the resort and at the nearby hotel where the second family was reportedly staying.
Approximately 150 protesters gathered to voice opposition to the immigration sweeps that have escalated under the Trump administration’s direction in recent weeks.
Park security, in coordination with Secret Service agents, reportedly shut down several attractions for the second family’s private use, delaying access for general guests.

One Reddit user posted a photo showing a line of Secret Service agents blocking off access to the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.
“They closed the entirety of pirates and part of New Orleans just so Vance could ride,” the post claimed.
The ride closures sparked waves of online backlash from irate Disney fans.
“This was a power move, plain and simple. I don’t care what political office he holds, he’s not a big deal,” one user wrote.
“I’ve seen and legit ridden rides with major celebrities who walked around like everyone else. That, or they pay for the privilege of having the park to themselves. I hope every single ride he rode broke down.”
Another commenter argued, “I’d say this about anyone regardless of politics, but I kind of think you forfeit your privileges to have a normal family day at Disneyland if you are elected to a national office.”
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump spent Sunday evening in a different kind of spotlight—attending the FIFA final at MetLife Stadium.
Trump, who was invited by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, cheered on as Chelsea FC defeated Paris Saint-Germain FC in a match he described as “a bit of an upset.”

Speaking to reporters after the event, Trump used the moment to highlight what he views as the resurgence of American strength on the global stage.
“[The US] is doing very well on the other stage, on the political stage, on the financial stage. I was just in Saudi Arabia, I was in Qatar, I was in the UAE… all of the leaders said ‘A year ago your country was dead, and now you have the hottest country in the world,’” Trump said.
“There’s a lot of truth to that. We were doing very badly as a country in an incompetent administration and now we have a hot country,” he added.

“It’s really hot. And I think the soccer is going to be hot here too.”
Trump also reflected on the unifying power of sports, calling soccer “the most international sport” and suggesting it could help bring countries closer together through shared enthusiasm.
When a reporter jokingly asked if he might sign an executive order to officially rename “soccer” as “football” in the U.S., Trump appeared intrigued. “I think we could do that,” he told DAZN.
