During the opening night of the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay, former Green Bay Packers star Clay Matthews took the opportunity to send a “message” from President Donald Trump to the team’s longtime rivals, the Chicago Bears.
The moment, filled with crowd-pleasing theatrics, occurred just ahead of the draft’s first pick and was received with enthusiastic cheers.
Flanked by Packers alumni including Jordy Nelson, Mason Crosby, Ahman Green, and James Jones, Matthews stepped to the podium next to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
“I’m gonna go off script here real quick … Roger,” Matthews said. “I just got off the phone with the president, Donald Trump. He asked me to pass a message along to all 32 NFL franchises. Let me tell you what it reads here, alright.”
This is great. 😂

The Super Bowl winner then delivered the punchline: “It says, ‘My fellow Americans, the Bears still suck!'” The crowd erupted in applause, clearly enjoying the spirited jab aimed at Chicago.
Matthews was drafted to the franchise in 2009, where he spent ten seasons in Green Bay, becoming a six-time Pro Bowler and an All-Pro selection in 2010.
His return to Green Bay for this year’s draft, held in the heart of Packers territory, highlighted his legacy with the franchise.

In keeping with Packers tradition, Matthews also rode onto the stage alongside Goodell on a child’s bicycle, mirroring a custom during Green Bay’s training camp.
In a lighter moment shared with Fox News Digital, Matthews recalled his own draft day story, noting some confusion from his mother.
“Green Bay called and traded up in the Draft, so everybody knows I’m going to Green Bay – it flashes up on the screen,” he said. “But my mom, she somehow missed it and thought I was going to New England.”
“So, for about an hour or so afterwards – now, mind you, this is prime New England, Super Bowl, Tom Brady – she was fired up,” he explained.
“About an hour later when she found out I was going to Green Bay, she was like, ‘What?! We’re not going to New England?!'”
Matthews took it in stride. “I didn’t get all worked up, though. Two years later, we won the Super Bowl, I had amazing success during my 10 years [there].”
As the draft unfolded, the Bears made headlines of their own, though not for reasons Chicago fans might have hoped.
Opting to draft Michigan tight end Colston Loveland with the 10th overall pick, the Bears passed over Penn State’s Tyler Warren, widely regarded as the top tight end prospect. The move stunned many draft analysts.
ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky reacted to the decision: “I like Loveland. He reminded me a lot of [Lions tight end Sam LaPorta], obviously Ben Johnson coming over from the Lions so that makes a lot of sense. I’m not floored or shocked, but I am surprised that it’s Loveland over Tyler.”

The Colts later selected Warren four picks after Chicago’s pick, drawing additional attention to the Bears’ controversial decision.
Elsewhere during the event, an unexpected viral moment came courtesy of Kelvin Banks Jr., the University of Texas offensive lineman taken ninth overall by the New Orleans Saints.
As Banks celebrated with family and friends after receiving the call, his infant son Khalil stole the spotlight by spitting up amid the cheers.

Social media had a field day. “Kelvin Banks being drafted to the Saints was too much for the baby to handle,” one commenter joked.
Another added, “Kelvin Banks Jr.’s baby spitting up on the couch was a great moment. If my Dad was drafted by the Saints I would be puking too.”
The night wasn’t without more serious moments. Derrick Harmon, newly drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round, spoke candidly about personal challenges he faced during his path to the NFL.

“It’s truly a blessing. It’s really a blessing. But it was a little bittersweet. My mom wasn’t with me – she’s at the hospital right now on life support,” Harmon shared.
“After I get off the phone with you guys, I’m headed straight to the hospital to tell her that her son got drafted,” he added.
His mother, Tiffany, reportedly suffered a stroke during his time at Michigan State and has since undergone brain surgeries.
“It was a little bittersweet because she worked just as hard as me to get to this moment,” he noted. “But it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Like I said, I’m very excited.”
Another emotional tribute came from LSU offensive lineman Will Campbell, who was taken fourth overall by the New England Patriots.
Campbell chose to honor his late LSU teammate, wide receiver Kyren Lacy, by wearing a white pin with a purple No. 2 — Lacy’s jersey number — on his green pinstriped suit.

“I got the #2 pin on my lapel. Kyren is a special human being. I feel for his family. He was gonna get his name called this weekend,” Campbell said about his late teammate.
Lacy, who had declared for the NFL draft, had his professional future clouded by criminal charges stemming from a fatal car crash in Louisiana last December.
According to police, Lacy was allegedly driving recklessly and fled the scene after a crash that claimed the life of 78-year-old Herman Hall.
He was booked on multiple charges including negligent homicide and felony hit-and-run in January. Lacy’s case was set to be reviewed by a grand jury just days after his reported death.

Tragically, police reports indicate that Lacy died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after fleeing from authorities near Houston.
According to statements provided to TMZ, a domestic disturbance had escalated before Lacy discharged a weapon and then fled the scene.
When police later located his vehicle, they attempted to stop him, but Lacy did not comply. He was found dead after crashing his car.
