Vice President JD Vance fumbled during what should’ve been a celebratory moment for his collegiate team.
On Monday, while honoring the Ohio State Buckeyes for their national championship win over Notre Dame, the Ohio native and proud alum managed to drop the team’s trophy during a White House ceremony.
Vance, clearly thrilled to welcome his alma mater to Washington alongside President Trump, hoisted the championship trophy above his head, only for the top to detach from the base and tumble to the ground in front of players and press.
TreVeyon Henderson, one of the Buckeyes’ stars, quickly jumped in to help salvage the situation. But Vance, apparently embracing the chaos, just raised the top portion by itself while the base sat awkwardly nearby on a table.

Trump, standing next to him holding a team helmet, looked less than impressed as the mishap unfolded.
Trying to keep things on track, Vance said, “I just wanna say, proud of this team, Mr. President, thank you for hosting and thanks to the whole state of Ohio for showing up and cheering for our Buckeyes. God Bless you guys.”
The president, meanwhile, winced at the trophy incident—but didn’t escape the moment entirely unscathed.
Trump made a small but noticeable error when he praised former Buckeyes quarterback Will Howard, mistakenly referring to him as “Tennessee quarterback Will Howard.”
That’s despite Howard having played for Ohio State in their College Football Playoff win over the Volunteers.
Still, Trump kept the praise coming, saying that Howard was “going to be so rich,” and shouting out to wide receiver Jeremiah Smith for scoring the game winning touchdown.

“He was at a level nobody else has been at, from what I hear. Nobody could stop him, even as a freshman,” he remarked about Smith.
Trump also called Vance the “biggest [Buckeyes] fan of them all” in his administration, which was proven when the Vice President spotted a fan in the crowd wearing Michigan gear and couldn’t resist a jab.

“I don’t know who let the guy over in the corner here in a Michigan hat into the celebration, but I’m about to tell the Secret Service you’ve got a dangerous weapon, sir,” he joked, pointing to the longtime Ohio State rival.
After the fumble, Vance tried to play off the moment online. “I didn’t want anyone after Ohio State to get the trophy so I decided to break it,” he wrote on X.
But the VP wasn’t the only one navigating awkward moments at the White House this week.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer found herself caught in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons after a visit to D.C. over the weekend.
Hoping for a low-profile trip to discuss federal disaster aid and defense funding, Whitmer was surprised to find herself at a very public Executive Order signing with Trump.
As the cameras rolled, a photo of her trying to shield her face with a file folder went viral.

The New York Times picked it up alongside a piece discussing the tightrope Democrats walk when working with the Trump administration.
Speaking at the Detroit Economic Club on Monday, Whitmer tried to make light of the incident. When asked about her trip, she mimed the same folder move that got her attention, drawing laughs from the crowd.
The moderator, having seen the coverage, quipped, “The next morning I woke up and there you are in the paper,” raising a newspaper in front of his face to reenact the shot. “Beautiful picture of you.”

Whitmer, for her part, owned it. “Someone asked me, ‘What was going through your mind at that moment?’ and it was, ‘I don’t want my picture taken,’” she said with a laugh.
“I kind of wish I hadn’t put my folder up in front of my face, but whatever. You know, I was there.”
“I just wrote a book about learning to laugh at yourself, so I’m — I’m pretty good at it,” she added. “And we all make, you know, we all have our moments.”
