Former President Donald Trump took a swing at the owners of the Cleveland Guardians for changing the team’s name from the Cleveland Indians in 2021.
Despite being known as the Indians since 1915, owner Larry Dolan caved to pressure from a “vocal minority” who dubbed the name as racist.
A move that Trump trolled the 93-year-old for during his campaign rally in Dayton on Saturday.
“I like sports and I like tradition. So you have a team called the Cleveland Indians. Indians. They’re Indians,” Trump began.

“And they took the team Cleveland Indians and made it to the Cleveland Guardians. Almost like they’re in charge of a trust fund,” he mocked.
According to ESPN, after surveying fans and area leaders for a year, the team settled on the Guardians, which was “inspired by eight massive, art-deco statues on the Hope Memorial Bridge near the ballpark.”
The name was already taken by a local roller derby team, who filed a lawsuit for trademark infringement, which was ultimately rapidly settled when they came to a “amicable resolution” that allowed both teams to share the name.
Trump also struck out at state Senator Matt Dolan, the son of Larry Dolan, who owns a partial stake in the team.
“And my attitude is anybody that changes the name of the Cleveland Indians to the Cleveland Guardians should not be a senator. Should not be a governor,” he remarked.
“I don’t know Matt Dolan, but just know that he’s the guy that I guess owns the team in some form and he was in charge of changing the name,” Trump concluded.
Dolan, a Republican, was elected to represent Ohio’s 24th district in 2022, after refusing to support Trump during his campaign.
Over the weekend, the ex-president explained why he swung at comedian Jimmy Kimmel on Truth Social, while he was in the middle of hosting the Academy Awards.
“Now look, look, Jimmy Kimmel is every is … every night he hits me I guess. His ratings are terrible,” he said during a Sunday interview on Fox News’s “MediaBuzz.”

“I hear he hits me all the time, so I figured I’d hit him, because I thought he was a lousy host,” Trump added.
Kimmel reacted to the post by interrupting the Oscar’s live broadcast to read Trump’s “review” to the audience.
“Has there ever been a worse host than Jimmy Kimmel at the Oscars?” Trump wrote at the time.

“His opening was that of a less than average person trying too hard to be something which he is not, and never can be.”
He also suggested that the network “get rid of Kimmel” and replace him with “Good Morning America” coanchor George Stephanopoulos, who he called “another washed up, but cheap, ABC ‘talent.’”
“Well, thank you, President Trump,” Kimmel shot back. “Thank you for watching, I’m surprised you’re still – isn’t it past your jail time?”
Trump said he was surprised that Kimmel read the post on air, particularly when he did it right before the Academy Award for Best Picture was awkwardly presented by Al Pacino.
He also pointed out that the host was asked by producers to not ad-lib the bit, which Kimmel confirmed during an interview the next day on “Live with Kelly and Mark.”
“They were like, ‘You’ve got a little bit of time,'” Kimmel commeted. “I was like, ‘I’m reading the Trump tweet.’ They were like, ‘No, no, don’t read that!’ Yes I am.”
“Now the big story is that they all begged him not to do it,” Trump told host Howard Kurtz. “He probably stupidly, you know, he had to act in a short period of time, like minutes, right? He had minutes, because he’s on air.”
“He sees this thing and he wants to go out there and he wants to, I guess confront me and so … he ends up reading my [post],” he continued.
“I said, ‘This guy’s even dumber than I thought.’ The thing went viral, it’s been all over the world now, and all he had to do is keep his mouth shut.”
