Conservative commentators absolutely torched former FBI Director James Comey after he released a video on his Substack Sunday gushing over pop superstar Taylor Swift and taking swipes at President Trump.
The clip features Comey praising Swift as “a truly inspirational public figure” and celebrating her appearance on NFL brothers Jason and Travis Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast.
“Taylor Swift and I go way back. I went to my first concert of hers 15 years ago. I’ve been to a second and I have helped financially support the attendance of a lot of family members and others,” Comey began.
“I’m in a family’s Swiftie group chat. I know all her music, and I listen to it in my headphones when I cut the grass,” he added.
A new James Comey hostage video just dropped.
This time he calls himself a “Swiftie” and says Taylor Swift helps him cope with Donald Trump.
You really can’t make this up.

The former FBI chief insisted Swift’s music has been a cornerstone in his household, claiming her work carried his family through “adversity and celebration.”
He also added that her influence had inspired him to resist “bullies,” presumably referring to Trump.
According to Comey, Swift’s career offers a lesson in standing firm without becoming combative.

“We need to stand up to jerks and defend what matters, but I think we have to try to do that without becoming like them, which is what makes me think about Taylor Swift,” he said.
He then pivoted to Trump, admitting he gets a “strange feeling” because he doesn’t want Americans “to become like Trump and his followers.”

“There are far more decent, honest, kind people in America than there are mean jerks. And don’t get me wrong, we have our jerks, millions of them,” he said.
He doubled down later in the clip, again invoking Swift: “I am not an advocate for weakness. Of course, we need to stand up to jerks and defend what matters, but I think we have to try to do that without becoming like them, which is what makes me think about Taylor Swift.”
Comey then reminded his viewers of Swift’s anti-Trump stance. “She’s made clear that she sees Donald Trump for what he is, and last year, she urged Americans not to make the serious mistake of electing him,” Comey added.

“Of course, we’re now living with the consequences of that mistake, but while our elderly makeup-covered president is posting about whether Taylor Swift is still hot and declaring that he can’t stand her, what’s she doing?” Comey asked rhetorically.
“Living her best life, producing great music, and, as she urged all of us to do during the podcast, not giving the jerks power over her mind.”
Comey’s jab referenced Trump’s recent comments pitting Swift against actress Sydney Sweeney.
Earlier this month, Trump declared Swift was “No Longer Hot” following her endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024.
Donald Trump says that his posts are the reason that “woke singer” Taylor Swift is “no longer hot”:
“Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the ‘HOTTEST’ ad out there. It’s for American Eagle, and the jeans are ‘flying off the shelves.’ Go get ‘em Sydney! […] Just look at… pic.twitter.com/wLmw66OUZT

The ex-FBI director also praised Swift’s advice from her podcast interview with the Kelce brothers.
“She said something about dealing with internet trolls that stuck with me – think of your energy as if it’s expensive,” Comey explained.
During that appearance, Swift told listeners to treat their attention like a luxury.
“Not everyone can afford it. Not everyone has invested in you in order to be able for you have the capital to care about this,” she said.
Comey has long been open about his political leanings since his firing by Trump in 2017.
Though once a registered Republican, Comey endorsed Harris in 2024 and called on voters to support Democrats as far back as the 2018 midterms.
The animosity between Comey and Trump has remained high-profile. Earlier this year, Comey posted an image of seashells spelling out “86 47.”
Within some circles, “86” is slang for “to kill or murder,” while “47” refers to Trump as the 47th president.

Anti-Trump activists often pair the numbers to call for the president’s assassination.
That post sparked outrage and scrutiny, leading to Comey reportedly coming under investigation for implying that Trump “should be assassinated.”
In July, the FBI also confirmed an inquiry into Comey and former CIA Director John Brennan over their roles in the Trump-Russia probe.
Comey’s Swift-themed video prompted swift pushback from conservatives online.
Commentator Benny Johnson blasted the clip, writing, “A new James Comey hostage video just dropped. This time he calls himself a ‘Swiftie’ and says Taylor Swift helps him cope with Donald Trump. You really can’t make this up.”
Dinesh D’Souza echoed that sentiment, suggesting Comey was attempting to reinvent his public image.

He noted Comey was now “trying to come across as a normal guy, a Taylor Swift fan, and a champion of civility and decorum” despite “using his power for years to entrap Trump, Flynn and others.”
Collin Rugg, another conservative voice, couldn’t resist mocking Comey for the video.
“It’s truly mind-blowing that this man served as the FBI director,” Rugg said. “His entire life is him trying to convince the world that he is a nice, empathetic guy. It’s his entire identity. Huge red flag.”
“It’s good for Americans to see stuff like this as a reminder that the heads of powerful government agencies, including the FBI, are generally not impressive people at all, and in cases like Comey, are actually world class losers,” Buck Sexton added.
