A heated dispute between actress Carrie Coon and conservative commentator Meghan McCain got even more fiery after the “White Lotus” star referenced President Donald Trump in a viral scene.
The online exchange began when Coon reposted a message from McCain on X, accompanied by a cryptic comment that set off a heated back-and-forth.
In response, McCain suggested she might stop watching the HBO series, claiming the actress had “tweeted some nasty crap” at her.
The controversy stemmed from a scene in which Coon’s character, Laurie, shares a bottle of wine with two longtime friends, Kate (played by Leslie Bibb) and Jaclyn (played by Michelle Monaghan).
During the conversation, Kate reveals her support for Trump, sparking a tense debate among the women. The moment quickly gained traction online, with audiences reacting to the political exchange.
Ahead of the season finale, Coon addressed the situation in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, suggesting that McCain and viewers with similar political leanings might actually appreciate the inclusion of a conservative perspective in the series.
“I do think people like Meghan McCain and her community are really gratified to see a conservative person on television,” she stated.
Yes Carrie, I am “gratified” that the conservative character represented on White Lotus is the responsible, family oriented one not making a fool of herself.
Unlike the progressive liberal you’re representing who is sleeping with hotel staff and showing her tits to everyone. https://t.co/wRbv0JG7hN

“I have conservative people in my life who reached out to me to say that was an awesome conversation because I don’t think it vilifies Kate.”
McCain took offense at Coon’s remarks and responded on X, directly addressing the actress.
“Yes Carrie, I am ‘gratified’ that the conservative character represented on White Lotus is the responsible, family-oriented one not making a fool of herself,” McCain wrote.
“Unlike the progressive liberal you’re representing who is sleeping with hotel staff and showing her t**s to everyone.”
Coon then shot back: “I didn’t realize my quote was so inflammatory. Is ‘gratified’ a new trigger word?”

In the series, Coon’s character, Laurie, is portrayed as a liberal New York attorney. During her stay at the resort, she becomes involved with a much younger man she meets through a staff member.
One of the more talked-about moments in the show features Laurie flashing her chest while intoxicated in a swimming pool.
The tension between Coon and McCain can be traced back to a social media interaction following Trump’s address to Congress in early March.

After the speech, McCain posted an emotional reaction on X, stating that it had moved her to tears.
“This is the first time I can remember crying during a state of the union. Thank you, President Trump. This is so beautiful. Anyone who has been impacted by brain cancer knows how special this is,” McCain wrote.
Her post quickly drew criticism from users pointing out that Trump had previously cut funding for cancer research. Coon later responded with a post of her own, simply writing: “Who’s gonna tell her?”
Two days later, McCain retaliated by posting a screenshot of Leslie Bibb’s character, Kate, smirking after revealing her political views on the show.

She captioned the image with a message aimed at Coon, debating whether she should continue watching the show.
“I can’t decide if I should still watch tonight since one of the stars decided to tweet some nasty crap at me,” McCain wrote.
Bibb, who portrayed Kate in the series, weighed in on the conversation as well. She praised the show’s creator, Mike White, for crafting a moment that resonated with audiences.
“I thought the Trump scene was amazing,” Bibb said. “Mike has this uncanny ability to instantly be part of the zeitgeist.”
In a separate interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Coon said that a controversial scene was dropped from the season after Trump won the Presidential Election in November.
The actress told the outlet that the scene involved her character trying to explain to her friends that her daughter is “actually non-binary, maybe trans, and going by they/them.”
‘White Lotus’ star Carrie Coon reveals her character was supposed to have a nonbinary child with they/them pronouns but the scene was cut after Donald Trump’s re-election:

“It was only a short scene,” she said, “but for me, it did make the question [in Episode 3] of whether Kate voted for Trump so much more provocative and personally offensive to Laurie, considering who her child is in the world.”
She said that White cut the scene after Trump won because of his administration’s attacks on trans rights.
“Considering the way the Trump administration has weaponized the cultural war against transgender people even more since then, when the time came to cut the episode down, Mike felt that the scene was so small and the topic so big that it wasn’t the right way to engage in that conversation,” Coon commented.
