Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent took Barack Obama’s Cheesecake Factory joke straight to the restaurant’s doorstep Monday, firing back at the former president after he mocked Donald Trump’s White House renovations.
Bessent was leaving a Cheesecake Factory near the White House when he was asked about Obama’s comparison of Trump’s decorating choices to the popular restaurant chain. Rather than defend the president’s taste in gold, the Treasury secretary took a swipe at Obama’s own architectural legacy.
“Well, two things. This is the man who built the museum that looks like Darth Vader’s tomb,” Bessent told Fox Business.
“I had a great meal. I always have a great meal, and I would tell the Martha’s Vineyard set to give it a try.”

Bessent also revealed his usual order, telling reporters that he always gets the French dip cheeseburger and that Monday’s meal was “excellent.”
His remarks came two days after Obama criticized Trump during a campaign rally in Ohio, where the former president turned the White House’s ongoing renovation projects into a punchline.
“He seems very focused on home renovations. He should be on HGTV,” Obama told the crowd.

“What’s with the gold? … He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory.”
Obama also criticized the administration’s work on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, claiming a no-bid contract had left the landmark in worse condition.

The Washington Post has reported that the Trump administration is expected to spend at least $900 million on construction projects involving the White House.
Trump responded to Obama’s remarks Monday while speaking with reporters at Joint Base Andrews, questioning his predecessor’s intelligence before launching into a defense of the renovations.
“He doesn’t understand it because he’s not a smart guy,” Trump said. “The way he ran the country, only a stupid person would run the country like that.”
The president insisted that maintaining the historic building requires attention to its exterior, ornamental features and other details that he believes have been neglected.
“We have to explain to Obama that the White House is a symbol of America, and it has to be maintained properly,” Trump told reporters.
He pointed to deteriorating plaster, paint and decorative elements around the windows as examples of problems that needed attention.

“It’s not about money. It’s about seeing. Guys like Obama don’t see it,” Trump argued. “He doesn’t see dirt, he doesn’t see filth, he doesn’t see broken ornaments on a building.”
Trump returned to the restaurant comparison with another insult. “For you to say it was a Cheesecake Factory, that just shows why you were a lousy president,” he added.
The president wasn’t finished with the subject. Later Monday, during a rally in Corinth, Mississippi, he revisited Obama’s comments while speaking to supporters.

“Donald Trump spends a lot of his time fixing up the White House,” Trump said, repeating Obama’s criticism before asking, “Isn’t that a nice thing to do?”
“He said, ‘This isn’t a Cheesecake Factory.’ Can you believe it? Which is a very successful company. He doesn’t like successful companies,” Trump continued.
The White House’s official X account also joined the exchange, posting a doctored Cheesecake Factory menu featuring administration policies instead of restaurant dishes.

“Since we’re talking about The Cheesecake Factory,” the account wrote, “The only thing bigger than the menu is the list of President Trump’s accomplishments.”
A separate White House post called the restaurant chain “a great American institution.”
The dispute also drew reactions from political commentators, including CNN contributor Scott Jennings, who accused Obama of looking down on ordinary Americans.
Jennings claimed the former president earns substantial speaking fees and rarely eats at inexpensive restaurants.
“Makes speeches for 500k a pop,” Jennings wrote Saturday on X.
“Hasn’t eaten dinner that costs less than $250 in years. Has never been in a Cheesecake Factory. Undefeated at condescending to regular folks.”
Jennings also blamed Obama’s presidency for the political circumstances that helped bring Trump to power.
MS NOW host Joe Scarborough took the opposite view during Monday’s edition of “Morning Joe,” criticizing the backlash to Obama’s restaurant comparison.
“Can you believe how stupid the reaction is and how stupid they think Americans are?” Scarborough asked.
He also accused Trump and his allies of making comments that showed little respect for the public’s intelligence.
“Every time Donald Trump opens his mouth now, especially in this end run, they say such unbelievably stupid things that suggest that they think all Americans are dumb,” Scarborough added.
White House spokesperson Davis Ingle issued a separate statement attacking Democrats over their criticism of the administration’s renovation efforts.
“Dumocrats are opposed to anything that celebrates the greatness of our Country because they are America Last losers,” Ingle said.
“Thanks to the Builder-in-Chief, no other president has done more to beautify our Nation’s interior than President Trump,” the statement continued.
