Michael J. Fox blasted confusion over his own reported death after a CNN segment made it look like the actor had already passed away.
The “Back to the Future” star moved quickly to reassure fans he was alive after a tribute-style video began circulating across the network’s platforms.
The segment, titled “Remembering the life of actor Michael J. Fox,” triggered widespread confusion and rumors that the actor had died.
Fox addressed the situation directly in a post to his followers, making clear he was very much still here.

“How do you react when you turn on the TV and CNN is reporting your death?” he wrote.
He followed that with a string of reactions that mixed disbelief with humor.
“Do you…A) switch to MSNBC [sic], or whatever they are calling themselves these days, (B) Pour scolding hot water on your lap, if it hurts your fine, (C) Call your wife, hopefully she’s concerned but reassuring, (D) Relax, they do this once every year, (E) Ask yourself wtf ? I thought the world was ending, but apparently it’s just me and I’m ok,” he posted.

The tribute package itself leaned heavily on Fox’s career and public advocacy work, using archival footage and narration that framed his life in past tense.
“He came into our living rooms on the small screen each week as Alex P. Keaton and eventually onto the big screen as Marty McFly in Back to the Future,” a narrator said in the clip. “But Michael J. Fox had a compelling third act as Parkinson’s sufferer and stem cell research advocate.”

“His most lasting role may have been as a tireless voice against Parkinson’s, a performance the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences honored with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2022,” the narrator added. “In the end, Fox came to understand that his battle against the disease brought out the best in him.”
CNN moved to contain the fallout after the segment spread. “The package was published in error; we have removed it from our platforms and send our apologies to Michael J. Fox and his family,” a spokesperson said.
The mistake fits into a long-running media practice of preparing obituary packages in advance, which occasionally surface at the wrong time.
In 1998, the Associated Press accidentally published a partial obituary for Bob Hope while he was still alive, leading to confusion after a congressman announced his death on the House floor.

More recently, false death reports have spread through digital manipulation and hacking.
In 2023, a false report claimed rapper Eminem had died after a hacker altered his Wikipedia page.
A similar incident hit President Donald Trump when a hacked social media account posted a fake announcement declaring him dead.
“I’m sad to announce, my father Donald Trump has passed away. I will be running for president in 2024,” the post read before it was removed.
Michael J Fox has made us laugh and Entertained us many years. Michael met his wife, Tracy Pollan on the set of Family Ties.
They were married on July 16, 1988 and have stayed Married, they have 4 Children and she has stayed with Michael through it all!

Fox’s real-world activity undercut the false report almost immediately.
He had appeared live at PaleyFest in Los Angeles the night before the CNN segment aired, taking part in a panel focused on Season 3 of “Shrinking.”
His representative reinforced that reality in a statement addressing the confusion. “Michael is doing great. He was at PaleyFest yesterday. He was on stage and giving interviews.”
Fox also shared a moment with Harrison Ford at the event, drawing strong reactions from fans who continue to follow his work closely.

Some responses focused on his legacy and impact. “This breaks my heart. I have always loved Michael J Fox and [his] work. He is a true 80s icon and always will be in my book! I love his work so much that I named my dog Alex after Alex P Keaton from Family Ties,” one comment read.
Others reflected on the emotional weight of his public battle with Parkinson’s disease.
“This is hard to watch, not to be insensitive, but I watched Michael on television every time back to the future comes on and to see that young impressionable young man go from being Marty McFly to being in a wheelchair because of Parkinson’s disease it’s very hard hard to watch,” another wrote.
Fox has continued working while managing the disease, which he was diagnosed with at age 29 in 1990.
He publicly revealed the diagnosis in 1998 and has since become one of the most visible advocates for Parkinson’s research.
He founded The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, which focuses on developing treatments and advancing efforts toward a cure.
Though he stepped back from acting in 2020 due to speech and memory challenges tied to the disease, he has remained active in selective projects.
He appeared in his 2023 documentary “Still” and returned for a guest arc in Season 3 of “Shrinking,” where his character also lives with Parkinson’s.

Fox has spoken openly about the physical toll of the condition. He said he has suffered multiple broken bones in recent years due to falls caused by balance issues and tremors.
“My problem is I fall down. I trip over things and fall down and break things. And that’s part of having this,” he said.
At the same time, he has continued to emphasize finding meaning in daily life.
“I’m still happy to join the day and be a part of things,” he said. “I just enjoy the little math problems of existence. I love waking up and figuring that stuff out and at the same time being with my family.”

He described his approach to work as a balancing act shaped by his energy levels. “I just feel I have to,” he said. “It’s a tradeoff. I want to be around for everything.”
“I want to be active at everything, keep working, keep my partnerships going, my good friends, and enjoy my time with my family,” he added. “And it’s all good; it’s so much better than it could be.”
Fox said returning to set recently came with a different mindset than earlier in his career.
“It was the first time ever I get to show up on-set, and I didn’t have to worry about, am I too tired or coughing or anything,” he told People.
“I just do it. It was really good, because for the moments when I say, ‘I’m not going to be able to do this,’ then I say, ‘Well, I’ll just deal with how I can’t do it in the scene.’ And you get through it.”
