Born Carlos Ray Norris on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma, he grew up in modest circumstances before moving to California at age 12.
After high school, he joined the United States Air Force in 1958 and was stationed in Korea, where he began studying martial arts.
He trained in disciplines including judo and Tang Soo Do, laying the foundation for a career that would eventually reshape action films.
Following his honorable discharge in 1962, Norris opened a martial arts studio that expanded into a chain across Southern California.

His schools attracted Hollywood clients, helping introduce him to the entertainment industry.
Action star Steve McQueen encouraged him to pursue acting, offering guidance on how to approach roles.
“He told me that I should think about projecting a presence, and never do a part that had a lot of dialogue,” Norris recalled.
His early film appearances were small, including an uncredited role in 1968’s “The Wrecking Crew.”
His breakthrough came in 1972 when he starred opposite Bruce Lee in “Way of the Dragon.”

The two had met years earlier at a karate championship in New York and developed a friendship that led to the casting.
Their fight scene in Rome’s Colosseum became one of the most recognizable moments in martial arts film history.
“At that time I held the world title, and kiddingly I said to Bruce, ‘Well, who wins Bruce?’” Norris said in a later interview. “And he says, ‘I win, I’m the star of this movie.’”
He continued, “I say, ‘Oh, I see, you want to beat the world champion.’ And he said, ‘No, I don’t, I want to kill the world champion.’”

Norris went on to build a film career that included more than 20 movies, starring in titles such as “Missing in Action,” “The Delta Force,” “Lone Wolf McQuade,” and “The Expendables 2.”
He reached a broader audience in 1993 with the debut of “Walker, Texas Ranger,” where he played lawman Cordell Walker.

His portrayal of a disciplined, morally driven lawman resonated with viewers across the country.
In 2010, then-Texas Gov. Rick Perry named Norris an honorary Texas Ranger, and the state senate later recognized him as an honorary Texan.
Outside of entertainment, Norris used his platform to promote conservative causes, appearing in political ads and speaking at rallies.
He drew attention in 2012 with an ad warning about the direction of the country under then-President Barack Obama.
