President Donald Trump welcomed the Los Angeles Dodgers to the White House to celebrate their 2024 World Series triumph over the New York Yankees on Monday.
The event, held in the East Room, was marked by the President’s notable interactions with players and a brutal jab at certain Democrat lawmakers in attendance.
“We have a couple of senators here. I just don’t particularly like ’em, so I won’t introduce,” he quipped, provoking laughter from the audience.
The comments were reportedly aimed at Sens. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) and Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), but their spokespeople told The Hill that they were not in the East Room during the event.

Padilla has a history of attacking Trump, and most recently said that the President was “taking a wrecking ball to the federal government” in order to fund tax breaks for the ultra wealthy.
On Sunday, Schiff, who served at the lead impeachment manager in Trump’s first impeachment trial, posted a snarky tweet about the President the day before the Dodgers visited the White House.
“President Trump out on a golf cart while people’s retirements go up in flames. That may end up being the most enduring image of his presidency,” Schiff said during an appearance on “Meet The Press” on Sunday.

“I didn’t think it was that big a deal, actually,” Trump said about his remark towards the California Democrats with a laugh.
Turning his attention to the Dodgers, President Trump lauded the team’s achievements and highlighted individual performances.
He reserved special praise for Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese sensation who made history by becoming the first Major League Baseball player to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season.
The President remarked on Ohtani’s exceptional talent and charisma, noting, “He looks like a movie star, he’s got a good future.”

Mookie Betts, the Dodgers’ star outfielder, also received attention during the ceremony.
President Trump approached Betts, shook his hand, and commented, “Mookie, that guy can play, can’t he? I mean, unbelievable.”
This interaction was particularly noteworthy given Betts’s previous decision to decline a White House visit in 2019 while with the Boston Red Sox.
It’s really cool to see President Trump & Mookie Betts shake hands & share a special moment at the White today, especially after Betts skipped the White House visit in 2017, which he later said he regretted.

At that time, Betts had stated, “I won’t be going there. I decided not to.”
His attendance at this event signified a shift, highlighting team solidarity over political considerations.
“This is not about me; I don’t want anything to be about me. It’s about the Dodgers,” Betts explained. “It’s about my loyalty to these boys, this clubhouse. And that’s all it is for me.”
“No matter what I say or what I do, people are gonna take it as political,” he said. “This is not about me; I don’t want anything to be about me.”
“No matter what I choose, somebody is gonna be p***ed. Somebody is gonna have their own opinion,” Betts concluded.
“But again, this is not about me. This is not about politics. This is about the Dodgers.

President Trump also took the opportunity to critique the Boston Red Sox’s 2020 trade of Betts to the Dodgers, describing it as a poor decision.
“I didn’t think that was a particularly good trade when they made it, and I happened to be right,” he remarked.
Since the trade, the Red Sox have struggled, while Betts has secured two additional World Series titles with Los Angeles.
Trump also drew comparisons between the Dodgers and his former hometown team, the New York Yankees.
He acknowledged the Yankees’ storied history, stating, “The Yankees are a great team and always a great franchise.”
President Trump tells the Dodgers about his friendship with George Steinbrenner.
“He was a great friend of mine, and he didn’t have a lot of friends. Watching a full 9 innings with him was….something else.”

“They’ve won a lot, probably, maybe more than any team in history overall, and you might be catching them pretty soon if you keep going,” he added.
In a lighthearted moment, President Trump praised Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, likening his managerial standards to those of the late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.
He quipped, “If you want to sit for nine innings watching the Yankees play with George, you were exhausted by the end of the game. It was very, it was actually hard work, but we love George.”

“Over the course of this amazing season, the members of this team gave us some of the most incredible performances ever seen on the baseball diamond,” he added about Robert’s Dodgers.
The ceremony concluded with Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw and owner Mark Walter presenting President Trump with a personalized Dodgers jersey.
After the ceremony, the team was invited to the Oval Office for a private meeting and photo session.

Roberts told the LA Times, “It wasn’t about putting pressure on any particular person. We still feel it’s a baseball thing for us. It’s tradition. And we’re doing it unified. So I’m excited about that.”
